Charles Evans is a New York jazz baritone sax player who combines consummately all the viable polyphonic, areas of the saxophone genre. Charles Evans decided to focus exclusively on the baritone saxophone at the age of seventeen, after playing alto saxophone for five years. His very open-minded parents, Clarence and Genevieve, fully supported his new found passion for music and the granddaddy of saxophones. After attending the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in 1996, he set out to develop a personal saxophone sound and become a great baritone saxophonist. -more- |

Mostly Other People Do the Killing (Moppa Elliott, Peter Evans, Jon Irabagon, Kevin Shea) "Abbreviated "MOPDTK" and billed as a "bebop terrorist band," they rip up history and make it anew while reusing proven hooks." Mostly Other People Do the Killing is a quartet founded on the idea that not only is Jazz still alive and vibrant, but it can and should be fun, engaging and thoroughly contemporary. Under the playful pseudonym, "Leonardo Featherweight," Moppa Elliott writes, "Rather than settling into one style or historical period, MOPDTK fuses the entire spectrum of Jazz and the various forms of improvised music it has spawned into a single, seamless melange of Uber-Jass." |

Puttin' On the Ritz (BJ Rubin, Kevin Shea) It would seem that many documents have been lost and/or destroyed, and as a result much of the origins and early history of this particular ensemble remains obscured. Perhaps future generations will be able to unearth more evidence, but that remains to be seen. What is known is that Puttin' On The Ritz consists of two human beings, both male and above the age of consent. They have been known to imbibe large quantities of alcohol before, during, and after their performances; for some reason this is their preference. Occasionally this obsession with intoxication produces disastrous results; other times they are merely threatened with violence. The problem is not that they are unaware of the answer, but that they forgot what the question was. Time will tell, weather permitting.
BJ Rubin is an associate producer at the Daily Show and has a blog: "pukekos" where he discusses rare and out of print recordings by underground rock artists.

Yulenog is a yearly experiment dedicated to shoving glorious holiday spirit down the throats of you and your loved ones. An ensemble of thousands including the Hot Cup regulars props up lead vocalist Nathan Kuruna to bring unconventional holiday music to life in unconventional ways. We like to think it's like a punch in the face from Old Saint Nick himself. And remember, "Yulenog" in spell-check is "yelling." |
